Hypnosis, NLP, QiGong and Reiki Frequently Asked Questions
Hypnosis is a state of mind similar to relaxation – except with more focus. The person under hypnosis remains aware and conscious, and is able to stop at any time. People can’t “get stuck” in a hypnotized state and post-hypnotic suggestions are still processed through your conscious/subconscious mind. You cannot be made to do something outside of your will through hypnosis. The subconscious mind remains in control of your being even in a relaxed state called trance.
The beauty of hypnosis is the powerful deep change that gets elicited from the subconscious mind. This tool is mostly used for changing “habitual” and undesirable beliefs, behaviors and methods you’ve adopted into your life, and can also be used to help you create new desirable behaviors and thoughts.
Hypnosis is a pleasant, natural state, similar to daydreaming, and is highly effective for self improvement and making positive changes in your life. During hypnosis you are focused, alert, and aware of your surroundings. It is relaxing and pleasant. Most people are in and out of this state every day, for example when you are caught up in a good book or movie, or when you are doing something routine and lose track of time. The difference is that you choose to be in this state, and you are motivated to make a change.
Can I get stuck in hypnosis? Is hypnosis safe?
Hypnosis is very safe, and no, you can’t get stuck in hypnosis! Hypnosis is a natural state of consciousness. You are not unconscious or asleep. It’s like daydreaming about a positive goal that you want to reach. If you choose, you can simply open your eyes at any time. Hypnosis was approved by the American Medical Association as an effective complimentary therapy in the 1950’s.
Will I reveal private information?
No, you will not reveal anything you don’t want to reveal. You are always in complete control. You are simply relaxing and imagining your positive goals – I’m doing most of the talking.
Can I be hypnotized?
Since we are all in trance 99.x% of the time – living out a script that was created from our birth to about 5 years old, not really thinking about what’s really going on, just doing… yes you can be and have been hypnotized. You need to be willing, motivated, and able to pretend – yes, just like when you were a kid! If you can worry or daydream, chances are you can enter relaxed state of hypnosis quickly.
Remember stage hypnosis is driven mostly by time and is supported by willing, highly somnambulistic (a state similar to sleepwalking) subjects that were carefully selected by the hypnotist before the actual payload of the show begins. Those who “couldn’t be hypnotized” are summarily rejected in favor of those who could – however – given enough time and trust with the hypnotist nearly anyone can go into a deeply relaxed hypnotic state.
Do you control me during hypnosis?
This may be the most common misconception about hypnosis. A qualified hypnotherapist simply acts as a “tour guide” to help you reach a deeply relaxed state allowing you to open to suggestions for change. Because you are in control, all hypnosis is really self hypnosis requiring your participation in the process.
When you see a stage hypnotist working with subjects who volunteered to come up on stage knowing full well they’d be asked to do something others would find funny, you are seeing those who are willing to pretend and go along and enjoy themselves acting funny. Nobody else stays on the stage – skeptics, highly analytical people, someone worried or afraid… they’re all weeded out. You are aware and cannot be made to do something your value system prohibits.
The body is an intelligent being that our conscious mind has incongruities with over various beliefs, rules and expectations. Hypnosis allows suggestions to bypass the critical thinking mind that wants to examine everything and categorize, measure and summarize it as quickly as possible – often minimizing and distorting the event. Without the critical thinker you might consider a suggestion much easier, and it will be congruent with your outcome.
NLP – Neuro Linguistic Programming – addresses the detailed way our mind works. Just like a computer program – our brain plays back “scripts” that we’ve created to deal with our angry boss, our children and family, our day at work, etc. Each of these processes can be examined and tweaked or even rewritten to eliminate phobias, give you a great sense of confidence in the face of formerly overwhelming fear, or otherwise change what you’ve been wanting to change. Painless – no need to revivify the pain, simply know what it is you don’t want, and what you do want. Most of us know what we don’t want!
NLP is a unique study of human behavior and performance which uses the mind’s own language to consistently achieve one’s desired outcome. A Practitioner of NLP uses various strategically designed techniques, visualizations, relaxations and behavioral conditioning patterns specifically designed to help clients understand and motivate themselves, change limiting beliefs, improve undesirable behavior patterns, and most importantly – achieve their desired outcome.
Reiki and QiGong
I perform distance energy work as well as working in person. I need only a name and I always appreciate a photo and think it helps to focus better. In person I work hands off or hands on based on your preference – if you are not familiar with energy work please visit the links to QiGong and Reiki in the Links section. You’ll be fully clothed reclining in a comfortable chair or lying on a massage table with eye pillows, a heated blanket, scented candles, music or nature sounds if you like – your comfort and relaxation is important. Each session lasts between 30 and 90 minutes, and it is most helpful with distance sessions to take the time to get into and stay in a relaxed state to receive the session, such as listening to some music that helps you relax. You may notice some of many minor sensations during and for a short time after your session. This is completely normal – like a healing flesh wound itches as it heals, so will your body make some adjustments to accommodate the healing process.
I am not a doctor, nor am I special in any way. I do not/can not provide any medical advice and am simply balancing energy through bio-energetic practices of Reiki and Chinese QiGong. I have been practicing meditation for many years, otherwise I’m just like you – a frail yet resilient being. I’ve learned through practice to channel and focus energy in a way that is healing to living beings as taught by my teachers and masters of the healing arts and martial arts. I simply utilize my bio-energetic field to channel and direct energy into your bio-energetic field using love as the basis and the energy of the universe as the medium. It works, and as Chunyi Lynn of Spring Forest QiGong (my teacher’s teacher) who wrote the book – “I was born a healer. You were born a healer, too!” – states we all have the potential to heal ourselves and others using Qi or universal energy.

We all have this power.
There is no religion, no dogma or attachment, no ritual or protocol beyond the simple basis of wanting to provide healing energy to your fellow citizen of the universe, close friend or loved one. Healing love, intention and focus create the catalyst our bodies need in order to clear the energy blockages that are causing the problems. There is no good energy, and no bad energy, only too much energy or not enough energy. The “laying of hands” and prayer have been around for a long time – and this is that, without the dogma.
“Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.
The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words – Rei which means “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power” and Ki which is “life force energy”. So Reiki is actually “spiritually guided life force energy.” (click to see full FAQ on Reiki.org)
